Annaleena Daley may have saved her mother Penny’s life – even before she left the womb, when doctors detected bowel cancer.

Annaleena was born by caesarean section at only 29 weeks’ gestation, a month after her mother Penny, 28, was diagnosed with the disease, that typically hits in old age.
If not for Annaleena, Mrs Daley’s cancer may have remained undetected for much longer, giving it time to spread to other parts of the body.

Doctors removed the cancer immediately after Annaleena was born on September 24th.

She was breathing on her own when she came out. Her surgeon, Peter Gourlas, said he had only seen one other case of bowel cancer in pregnancy. “It’s very rare to find anyone that age with bowel cancer. I would only see one or two patients a year under 30,” he said.

Because the cancer was picked up so early, Mrs Daley did not have chemotherapy but she will need regular screening for the rest of her life.
