Macmillan Cancer Support exists to help improve the lives of people living with cancer, their families and caregivers. Their primary focus for 2010 is to reach and improve the lives of everyone living with cancer.

Macmillan achieves these goals in many different ways. Their dedicated London Events team organizes special events. Celebrities such as Fashion designer Stella McCartney and Actress Kate Hudson raised over $75,000 on behalf of Macmillan Cancer Support during London Fashion Week.

These two women took in a charity auction of Mary McCartney’s photographs of stylish British women including Kate Moss, Vivienne Westwood and Helen Mirren.

Today, more people in the UK are living with cancer and one in three of us will get cancer at some point in our lives. Cancer affects us all and we can all help to make people’s experience of it better.

What’s more, cancer, and our experience of it, is changing. As the population ages, more people are getting cancer but, with the help of improvements in screening, diagnosis and treatment, more people are living longer with and after the disease.

This means that a growing number of people need more than just medical help; they also need information, practical, emotional and financial support. They’re often spending less time in hospital and more time at home – so cancer is becoming a part of more and more people’s daily lives.

By 2010 Macmillan Cancer Support hopes to to reach every single person who is diagnosed with cancer and to be there for them at every stage of their cancer journey, no matter who they are, what part of the country they live in, or what type of cancer they have. They will reach them by helping to make life better, in however large or small a way, through their services.

This help may come in ways they can see and touch, such as an information leaflet or specialist medical care and support.

There is a greater need than ever for their help. Visit: Macmillan Cancer Support
for more information.

Their innovative program is an essential complement to medical care, providing networking and support groups, workshops, education and social activities.

The Gilda’s Club philosophy of providing an emotional and social support community as an essential complement to medical treatment when cancer is in the family enables the organization to serve as a beacon for the provision of health care services in the 21st Century.
Joanna Bull, M.A., M.F.C.C., is the co-founder (along with Gene Wilder amd Joel Siegel) of Gilda’s Club and is an Honorary Member of the Board of Directors of Gilda’s Club Worldwide. Gilda’s Club is named for Gilda Radner, with whom Ms. Bull worked as a cancer psychotherapist during the comedian’s illness.

Throughout her career, Ms. Bull has worked to establish free cancer support communities – first at the pioneering Center for the Healing Arts in Los Angeles – later at The Wellness Community in Santa Monica and Redondo Beach, California, and finally at Gilda’s Club. In addition to participating in the development and administration of such communities, she has trained and supervised therapists extensively in the concept, and has worked with hundreds of people who have cancer, as well as their family members, on psychosocial issues related to cancer.

It is the vision of Gilda’s Club Worldwide to become the international leader for strengthening the global awareness of this philosophy, and to advance an understanding of the essential bond that emotional and social support brings to the cancer experience, not only for those living with cancer, but also for the families and friends who surround them.

This includes cancer patients, caregivers, family members or friends of cancer patients. As you probably know, Lance Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer and was told he had little chance of survival. Not only did he survive, but he went on to win seven Tour de France races and become one of the most celebrated athletes of our time.

The foundation’s website includes information about the mission of the organization, links to donate money and to help you get involved with their many activities, and an online store where you can purchase those popular yellow wristbands as well as an assortment of branded apparel, gifts and sports gear.

There are many cures for cancer and fortunately there are also many strategies that have a very good chance of stopping cancer in its tracks within weeks.

Jonathan Chamberlain’s wife, Bernadette, was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 1993. She underwent surgical investigation, radiation and chemotherapy and was dead exactly a year later. There is no doubt that she died as much from the treatment as from the cancer itself.

Looking back, Chamberlain feels that the biggest mistake they made was to do what the doctors advised because Bernadette could not have died sooner if they had done nothing. Since 1994 he has been researching orthodox and alternative treatments for cancer.

Chamberlain has written several books: Cancer: The Complete Recovery Guide and Cancer Recovery Guide: 15 Alternative and Complementary Strategies for Restoring Health.

On his website, Fighting Cancer, you can read the stories of people who have undergone both good and bad, orthodox and alternative treatments for cancer. You can also read the experiences of others by visiting Chamberlain’s blog, Cancerfighter’s Weblog.

Jonathan Chamberlain’s writings provide answers for himself and for others. These answers could hopefully lessen the suffering of mankind.

Bernadette Chamberlain died because she and her husband could not get the information they needed in time. Don’t make the same mistake.

Gilda dreamed that all people affected by cancer, as well as their families and friends, would have access to the same kind of emotional and social support that she received during her illness.

The first Gilda’s Club opened its signature red door in New York City in 1995. Additional clubhouses have since opened in dozens of large cities, small cities, and several points in between.

Gilda’s Club has helped change the lives of tens of thousands of members, restoring a sense of control and enriching the entire family. Gilda’s spirit lives on at every Gilda’s Club.

Gilda’s Club is committed to develop strategies and lead activities that will enable their worldwide group of independent affiliates to become the premier emotional and social support community for people with cancer and their families and friends.

The club nurtures affiliate network growth and serves as a unifying voice and catalyst to ensure program effectiveness, a quality brand image and the highest standard of operation wherever Gilda’s Clubs exist.

Their long-term goal is to strengthen the global understanding that emotional and social support are as essential as medical care when cancer is in the family.

Gilda’s Club founder Joanna Bull is a frequent lecturer at cancer-related institutes and psycho-oncology meetings and conferences around the world, and has been an advisor to the National Cancer Legislation Advisory Committee.

Gilda’s Club is distinguished by its unique philosophy and program. Completely free of charge, Gilda’s Club encourages a sense of “expertise” among members, and emphasizes community-building, collective wisdom and shared experience.
