The holiday season is a time we want to rejoice, find joy, shop, be with friends and loved ones and indulge in our favorite foods. When you have cancer, it’s not only frightening and lonely, the holidays can easily remind you that you’re not healthy as you were.
On the one hand, it’s a time that you are grateful for the things you have in life, but you also long for the things you don’t.
One of the things that can really get us down is not being able to eat all the foods we tend to associate with the season. Whether someone has cancer or not, these sugar and fat laden health zappers are potential enemies in disguise for all of us.
If we can’t partake in the usual customs, maybe we can look at the holidays as our special time to take care of ourselves, reboot and treat ourselves with love and kindness.
So instead of eating things like cookies, candy and alcohol laden egg nog, look for healthy things we can enjoy that are good for us like baked apples and warm butternut squash and maybe buy ourselves a special gift or good book to get us through the cancer treatments.
